Keratoconus is an eye condition where the structural changes within the cornea cause the cornea to become thin, thus affecting the shape of the eye and forming a more conical shape rather than a smooth curve.
The condition includes visual distortion, poor vision and blurred Vision (Astigmatism). Keratoconus is a degenerative disorder; its progression is unpredictable and at any stage the condition can go from mild to serious. As the condition advances, the thinning of the cornea increases, causing it to bulge more and become irregular shaped.
The signs and symptoms of Keratoconus can be diagnosed early by evaluating the corneal back surface topography map with the help of Pentacam.
This disorder begins at any age and slowly worsens before stabilizing or it can continue for decades.
If left untreated, Keratoconus can further result in scarring of the cornea making the patient blind and eventually requiring a corneal transplant.
Early detection of Keratoconus is important to stop its progression and the corneal abnormalities that are associated with it.
In early stages Keratoconus can be diagnosed after a detailed eye examination that includes Retinoscopy, Slitlamp, Pentacam(Gold diagnostic machine) and tests like Topography- to hold in the curvature of the cornea and Pachymetry- to determine the corneal thickness.
In worst cases a cornea transplant is required, where a donor’s cornea is stitched after removing the affected patient’s cornea.
